This year’s 90th anniversary year of the Estonian Republic makes us think of the times gone by. To illustrate it we have chosen the 20th year of independence 70 years ago. Moving pictures give one a better overview of the events than one gets when reading or listening. This year you can find film paragraphs of the happenings in 1938 that are filmed by operators of Estonian Culture Film and were shown in the newsreels in the cinema at the time. These paragraphs are uploaded onto our website on every Thursday of the second and forth week of the month.

Eestablished by Johannes Pääsuke (1892-1918), the first Estonian filmmaker, as far as we know. J. Pääsuke produced chronicles, short films and pictures of Estonian nature ordered by Estonian National Museum. He created the first Estonian feature film Karujaht Pärnumaal (Bear-Hunt in Pärnu District, 1914) 8 films by J. Pääsuke are stored.

Renamings: 1941 a state cinema propaganda institution The Estonian Newsreel Studio (former The Estonian Culture Film), 1945 The Tallinn Newsreel Studio, 1947 The Tallinn Film Studio, 1954 Tallinn Feature- and Newsreel Film Studio, 1963 Film Studio Tallinnfilm. Since 1994 the stateowned company. On 1997 The Estonian Film Foundation was established which inherited the shares and buildings belonging to the Tallinnfilm. Newsreels, documentaries, popular science films, puppet films and cartoons were produced.The last feature film was produced in 1994, the last newsreel in 1998. 2 215 titles are stored. The registration is in process, There will be more titles added.

Established by the single undertaker-filmmaker Theodor Luts (1896-1980). Feature films, pictures of Estonian nature were produced. T. Luts delivered special orders from Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Defence for filming living conditions at the Defence Army, training for reserve, summer camps of the Defence League, etc. 23 films by T. Luts are stored (2 of them were made by Siirius-Film – another studio established by T. Luts in 1927)

Established as a foundation and at 1936 was reorganized to a state institution, actually the only film company of that time. Newsreels and documentaries were produced. 318 titles are stored.
